  • A Single Trader holds half the World's Copper Supply

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that a single trader, rumored to be J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., holds approximately half of the world's exchange-registered copper stockpile. This single trader's copper holdings are said to be worth about $3 billion.

The WSJ said the price of copper is up 28 percent in 2010. It quoted Barclays Capital as saying that copper demand will outstrip supply this year by about 455,000 metric tons. Of J.P. Morgan, the report said the company "recently had a large position in copper, though it is unclear whether the U.S. bank increased its holdings or whether a new player has taken a dominant position."

A rise in copper prices is one of several drivers pushing up the price of cable.

  • Businesses to Buy 53 Million Tablets in 2016

10MID104ATablets will become a common sight in the workplace in the near future and they'll have a big impact on corporate MDM strategies.

Corporate tablet purchasing is poised to take off during the next few years, according to a new forecast from Gartner.

The research firm says that businesses across the globe will snap up 53 million tablets in 2016, more than triple the amount that they are expected to buy this year (13 million). Describing the consumerization of IT trend as an "unstoppable force," Gartner estimates that smartphone and tablet sales will reach 821 million units this year and cross the 1 billion unit threshold in 2013.

"In 2016, two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, and 40 percent of the workforce will be mobile," said Gartner research vice president Carolina Milanesi said in a statement.

    BYOD Challenges Await

Smartphones and tablets will make up 70 percent of all mobile devices sold in this year, adds Gartner. Such brisk mobile device adoption adds momentum to the BYOD phenomenon that's roiling the IT industry, said Milanesi.

Plus, it spells good news for mobile device management (MDM) solutions providers.

"For most businesses, smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices," said Milanesi.

    Android Ascendant

While the iPhone is the poster child of the consumerization of IT trend, devices powered by Google's Android operating system are mounting a big challenge to Apple's market-leading handset. Rival research outfit IDC last week revealed that Android made up 75 percent of smartphone shipments during 3Q12.

Gartner predicts that "56 percent of smartphones purchased by businesses in North America and Europe will be Android devices in 2016," a 34 percent increase over this year's estimates. "Today the wide range of brands and price points that the Android ecosystem is offering is winning over users. While Apple remains the heartbeat by which the market moves, Google has rapidly become its archrival," said Milanesi.

And Microsoft's big bet on Windows 8 will pay off as far as business customers are concerned. Gartner expects Windows 8 tablets to trail Apple's iPad and Android slates, but by 2016, tablets and convertibles powered by the software giant's touch-friendly OS will make up 39 percent of the business market in 2016.

  • China – the Aftermath of the Financial Crisis

This article on how the financial crisis of the past 2 years has affected production in small to medium size enterprises in China paints a picture of the progress made to overcome difficulties created by the financial crises around the world.... download article here

  • Chinese exports remain strong despite rising costs

China’s vast export sector has been battered on several fronts recently according to the Los Angeles Times. Demand from foreign customers has slowed. The Renminbi is strengthening, making Chinese goods more expensive. Hourly wages are rising with additional pressure resulting from headlines about poor working conditions at Foxconn, the massive assembler of Apple tablets and phones.

Despite this, China has strengthened its position in the global supply chain. Already the world’s largest exporter, China’s share of global exports expanded during the recent global downturn, increasing to 10.7 per cent last year from about 9 per cent in 2008. When times are hard lower cost goods have a greater edge.

Economists say the slowdown may continue depending on how the European debt crisis develops, and the results of the central government’s two-year campaign to deflate the nation’s property bubble.

“China is offsetting the head winds because it keeps capturing more market share,” said Louis Kuijs, an economist at the Fung Global Institute in Hong Kong. “Yes, labour is becoming more expensive over time, but it’s still much cheaper than the U.S. or Europe. The ratio of price to quality is still far more favourable for production in China.”

Prices for Chinese exports have risen 21 per cent since 2005, but less than the 32 per cent increase on goods from India and 33 per cent rise on exports from Mexico in the same period.

China’s growing rate of imports, has been rising faster than exports since the 2008 financial crisis because of the country’s explosive construction demand.

  • Earth Loop problems with Touchscreens

3 Simple Rules to reduce Noise Caused by Earth Loop faults in Audio Visual systems

A familiar problem for audio visual installers is the level of noise induced into the audio path created by earth or ground loops especially when using touchscreens but also projectors.

The cable screen/shield should be connected to the chassis earth only at one point (one end of the cable). This should be at the host connection for the best noise immunity.

The cable screen/shield is often connected to the chassis earth at both ends of the cable connection. Since this makes an earth to earth connection between the computer and touchscreen, it can create an “earth loop” or “ground loop” problem. Since the earths are probably at different voltages, a large current (often several amps in magnitude) can flow between the earth points if the shield has a lower impedance to the current flow than the normal earth path. For correct shielding, all cable shields should be connected together, and then earthed at a single point (at the host’s chassis earth - normally a computer in AV systems)

The signal earth must not be connected to the chassis earth

A chassis earth is intended as a safety ground for power supplies, EMI filters, voltage spike protection circuits, AC neutral returns, and all manner of AC and DC driven devices. As a result, the chassis earth can carry relatively large voltages and currents. The signal earth is not the same earth as the cable screen/shield earth which connects to the chassis earth  - it's the earth used for the audio signal

Power cable and signal cables must be segregated

The most common error when installing AV cabling is running power cables (110v or 240v  AC) in the same trunking or conduit as the audio visual cables (or running them alongside in ceiling voids) which is guaranteed to cause interference. The practice of running them together is often done to reduce the cost of cable installation but ignores the interference risks.  And if the AC cable is powering relays, motors, or fluorescent lighting with high voltage spikes then additional noise above the mains "hum" will be induced into the adjacent audio and video cables.

Systems using VGA cables are the main culprit as the audio is in analogue format and easily affected by induced hum and other noise, HDMI cables are less likely to be affected by low frequency noise - simple inline isolators can be used with VGA cables to overcome or reduce the problem
